I strongly agree with this article that having a negative online reputation is something all of us students should stay away from and prevent from happening. I am all for employers looking at our social media to make their decisions on who they will be hiring. Like the employers, I prefer to work with someone who will take their work seriously. Hiring someone who has a tendency to gossip about or make fun of another another coworker is someone the whole staff would not like to be around. In my own experience, I have worked with someone who bullies, gossips and makes inappropriate comments all day during while we were working. Even after work there would be things posted on social media that would be disrespecting not only my employer but the rest of the staff. I feel that if my coworkers social media was researched my employer would have made a different decision on hiring her. Experiencing this myself makes me more careful of the things I post on social media because my future is something I want to be successful in. Messing my future up is not an option and my social media will be monitored for things not only posted by myself but others as well to insure I do not experience any problems.
When it comes to online reputation, 'life's not fair, and companies aren't either.'' the writer states that your reputation online is more important than you think. Studies show that 70% of company recruiters said they rejected applications after finding negative and inappropriate material on their online profiles. Internet searches are often first, second or third the employers will look at before making a decision on who they will hire. Most of us would think that something we do as a teen will not affect us in the future but the article states ''life's not fair, and companies aren't either.'' and this statement is very true. Pictures, racial slurs, grammar, negativity and even gossip are all things that are being looked for on your online profiles. Employers will rarely give you a chance to explain the content discovered on your social medial. This can greatly affect your future in finding a job for yourself and can get rid of great opportunities for yourself. Colleges are also looking at their applicants profiles to also add to their decision. Social media can affect scholarship and sports opportunities for high school seniors looking to get into college.
